Dr. Burroughs was born in South Carolina, then moved to North Carolina where he attended high school at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics before going on to graduate from Greensboro College with a BS in Biology with honors. Dr. Burroughs completed his MD at Chapel Hill, then went on to complete a residency in Family Practice and a Fellowship in Sports Medicine through the Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro, NC.

Following fellowship Dr.Burroughs stayed in Burlington, NC where he helped start the Kernodle Clinic Family and Sports Medicine Clinic in Elon. He also served as the Assistant Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, and as Head Team Physician for Elon University, Western Alamance High School and the Burlington Indians minor league baseball team. After practicing in Burlington for 3 years, in August of 2003 he accepted the position of Director of Sports Medicine at the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program. In this position Dr. Burroughs provides a Musculoskeletal Clinic for Cabarrus and the surrounding counties and teaches musculoskeletal medicine and sports medicine to the residents of the CFM Residency Program.

Locally Dr. Burroughs is the Team Physician at Central Cabarrus High School, the Carolina Thunder (ABA Basketball Team) and serves as a consultant with all of the other Cabarrus County Schools. He also serves on the North Carolina Medical Society Sports Medicine Committee and on the North Carolina Athletic Association's Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
